When I first came to Colombia, the last thing I expected to discover was good desserts. When it came to sugar or salt, I’ve always learned towards savoury foods and still do. Now that I live in a country where sugar is in almost everything, I have come to accept sugar and sugar-rich products as a regular appearance in my lifestyle.
Last week, despite being a rainy and freezing afternoon I decided to man up, open my umbrella and take a stroll down to one of my favourite dessert shops for some much needed coffee and cake. As usual, I was overwhelmed with all the colourful displays of cakes and pastries but on this particular afternoon I was a man on the mission to get a slice of Tres Leches (three milks); a traditional cake made of condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream.
I discovered Tres Leches through a Colombian friend of mine on my first birthday celebration in Colombia. I remember thinking how much I loved and still love the moist and creamy texture of this Colombian classic as it always seems to melt in my mouth and leave me wondering how my slice disappeared so quickly.
Tres Leches is a must try for any foodie coming through Colombia so make sure you save a little room in your belly after getting through all the heavy dishes as it’s well worth the wait.
