There are few things that I default to eating when I’m feeling unoriginal. Spaghetti Bolognaise comes to mind. Packaged ramen is another. In Colombia when all else fails, I go with a standard menu of the day. However one of my favorite all time comfort meals is meatballs and thankfully in Bogota there’s a place that does just that.
Situated on an unlikely corner just a block east of the main strip of Carrera 4 in La Macarena lies Köttbullar, a Swedish concept restaurant that focuses on one thing…… Meatballs.
From both outside and inside, Köttbullar reminds me of a typical Parisian cafe. It’s a great place to go with a small crew or for a date as the place probably only sits around 20 people maximum. Intimacy is key when you’re diving into a bowl of balls.
The beauty of the menu lies in its simplicity; you pick your meat (veggie balls also an option), your sauce, how many you want and whether you want it served simple or in a sandwich. Sides include classic french fries, mashed potatoes, risotto of the week or stewed beans. Every week the chef offers an off the menu meatball special as well as their risotto of the week (Check their Facebook page or Instagram for updates).
As if meatballs weren’t enough to get your mouth watering, Köttbullar’s beer menu is also one of the best I’ve seen in the city offering a wide range of European beers.
I like to keep it simple when it comes to meatballs so I went for a pork meatball sandwich topped with a classic pomodoro sauce.
Köttbullar’s simple yet effective offer of meatballs combined with it’s intimate space makes for a very comfortable meal for those times when you feel like going out for a meal but can’t seem to decide what you want to eat. It’s a no-brainer decision that will leave you salivating for more of dem ballz.
