Seeing as the city I live in is cold and windy city 75% of the year, I often get a craving for a big hearty portion of good old pub food. So when I heard that a certain English chef had such a solution for me, I quickly made my way to his establishment, El Ingles Pub.
Located in the beautiful Quinto Camacho neighbourhood, El Ingles looks very much like what I imagine a traditional English pub to be. Walking in and seeing all the old posters of the Beatles, Guiness and English football teams will give any pub lover a hit of nostalgia.
The menu is lined with English classics such as fish and chips, traditional English breakfast, curry and cottage pie just to name a few. There is also an impressive burger menu for those who are up to the challenge of putting away a more than generous sized meat sandwich. I recommend going on Saturday or Sunday as every weekend the chef does a roast menu which comes with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, gravy and if you’re lucky you might even get a small portion of brussel sprouts. If the English food doesn’t appeal to you, there are also wraps, vegetarian options and Colombian food on the menu.
While you may think you’ve had enough food with the
huge gigantic mains, you must save room for dessert. El Ingles’ selection of classic English favourites such as apple crumble, sticky toffee pudding and death by chocolate will leave you wondering why the owner hasn’t yet opened up a side business focusing on his dessert menu.
Serving beer in proper beer mugs was a real touch and something that’s lacking in Colombian bars. Putting away a nice cold Club Colombia in a beer mug immediately put me in a better mood.
While I eat a lot of fish in Bogota, there is nothing like good old English Fish n Chips. The batter was done to perfection, not too oily and overwhelming and the fish was fresh. It was nice to have some real thick cut chips and not the usual old, oil drenched chips that you tend to find in Colombian restaurants. You also get a small portion of mushy peas, which was a nice surprise.
Meet my new best friend, the Hooligan burger aka the burger with everything; beef, cheese, bacon, fried egg, lettuce and tomato. You also get a small portion of home made onion rings and thick cut chips. My only minor complaint was I wish there were more onion rings but that’s more than compensated for with the size of the burger itself.
Here’s an instructional photo of how to eat a burger like a pro by yours truly:
Every time I go back to El Ingles, I say I’m going to try the Apple Crumble but I can’t seem to get past the Death by Chocolate. Perfectly moist and chocolaty and topped off with a warm chocolate sauce, this is the chocolate cake you’ve always dreamed off. My mouth is watering just looking at the photo and writing this review.
